<image:title>about - I am a User Researcher passionate about creating inclusive and enjoyable user experiences.</image:title>
<image:caption>Across my research career, I have investigated several cognitive and situational factors that contribute to human learning and behavior. Now, I examine how these and other factors can shape and impact user experiences with a focus on user-centered design.</image:caption>

      <image:title>research - pain research - What is a “painful” experience?</image:title>
<image:caption>In my two research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health I examined how psychological processes such as expectations and attention impact how we feel and categorize pain. Using mixed methods research including surveys, questionnaires, visual analog scales (VAS), eye tracking, neuroimaging, and physiological measures, we found that pain perception changes as a function of previously learned information. <image:title>research - space research - What happens to our brains in space?</image:title>
<image:caption>While at the University of Florida, I worked with Rachael D. Seidler as part of a large NASA grant under NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP). I followed a cohort of astronauts before and after they returned from space aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In my work, I was interested in investigating how astronaut brains change both structurally and functionally during spaceflight. For more information about this work, click below.</image:caption>

<image:title>research - space research - How do we learn and adapt new motor skills?</image:title>
<image:caption>As a secondary project, I was also interested in understanding the mechanisms of human motor skill learning, i.e., how do we learn how to ride a bike? How can I learn how to play a video game on one game controller and transfer and adapt my previously learned motor skills to a new controller or device? Here, I studied the conscious (explicit) and unconscious (implicit) strategies people use when learning and adapting new motor skills. This work culminated in my masters thesis, where I investigated behavioral changes, such as sensorimotor processing and adaptation, in response to head-down tilt bed rest — an analog that simulates a spaceflight environment (e.g., the International Space Station).</image:caption>
