In my two research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health I examined how psychological processes such as expectations and attention impact how we feel and categorize pain. Using mixed methods research including surveys, questionnaires, visual analog scales (VAS), eye tracking, neuroimaging, and physiological measures, we found that pain perception changes as a function of previously learned information. While at the University of Florida, I worked with Rachael D. Seidler as part of a large NASA grant under NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP). I followed a cohort of astronauts before and after they returned from space aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In my work, I was interested in investigating how astronaut brains change both structurally and functionally during spaceflight. As a secondary project, I was also interested in understanding the mechanisms of human motor skill learning, i.e., how do we learn how to ride a bike? How can I learn how to play a video game on one game controller and transfer and adapt my previously learned motor skills to a new controller or device? Here, I studied the conscious (explicit) and unconscious (implicit) strategies people use when learning and adapting new motor skills.
